STICKS - Caring for Your Arbutus Boards

  • Use a light scraper or spatula to gently scrape off any stuck on food

  • Wash the cutting board using mild dishwashing liquid, hot water and a clean cloth

  • Dry the board with a clean cloth or paper towel and let air dry for at least 15 minutes

  • Coat the board with a food grade mineral oil or beeswax. There are many commercial products that are designed for this purpose combining acceptable wax and food grade mineral oil. Once you've coated the board spend some time rubbing the mixture into the wood grain

If the board has started to absorb some strong odours from use you can use a lemon and salt combination to deodorize it. Squeeze lemon onto the board and coat with salt, let the board sit for an hour and then scrape the salt mixture off and follow with the cleaning steps above.

To disinfect the board use white vinegar, spray the vinegar onto the board surface and let sit for a few minutes, then wipe off with a damp warm cloth.

Do NOT submerge your board in water.

Do NOT use a dishwasher to clean.

Stones - How to care for your Pearls

Fresh water pearls are fragile, remember they were once part of a living creature. But don’t be alarmed, there are a number of things that you can do to maintain their beauty and aid in their longevity.

Store your pearls in a breathable soft container. You might choose an oldfashioned lined jewelry container that doesn’t close tightly, a bag made of soft material or wrap in a soft cloth before adding to a larger jewelry chest. Key here is to lie your piece flat (if a necklace or bracelet) and to ensure that you have closed the clasp before you put it away. Don’t leave your pearls laying around in direct sunlight or tossed together rubbing shoulders with other pieces of jewelry!

Wearing your pearls also comes with some recommendations. Don’t wear your fresh water pearls when you go swimming whether that be in chlorinated or salt water. If you wear make-up, perfume and/or use hairspray, even the use of body lotions, put on prior to your pearls to minimize their contact with something that will diminish their luminosity.

Cleaning your pearls is a two part process. If you are being extra vigilent, or if you know they got a spritz of perfume or sunscreen, give them a quick wipe down with a soft dry cloth prior to putting away. For most of us cleaning will be an occasional activity. It is something that is easy to do at home and doesn’t require any expensive or specialized solutions. All you need is a dish of warm water and two soft cloths. Simply dip one cloth in the warm water and if a bracelet or necklace, gently pull and twist the pearls through the damp cloth. Pat dry with your second cloth and leave out to fully dry. If your pearls are set with gold or silver add a couple of drops of Dawn dishsoap to your warm water and with a soft bristled toothbrush very gently brush the silver or gold clean. Avoid brushing the pearls! Finish off with a wipe of clean water and then dry.

Enjoy!!
