The Arbutus

Arbutus menziesii

The only native broadleaf evergreen tree in Canada, it’s restricted to a narrow band along the south west coast of North America. Almost impossible to successfully plant, the arbutus self-seeds itself in rocky outcrops (including growing directly from rocks). It is a beautiful tree, with multiple, twisting branches and a orange/red bark that peels like the skin of a snake exposing a satin feeling trunk underneath.

Arbutus wood is heavy and very hard, tending to be brittle and inclined to crack as it drys.  We encourage you to keep our boards oiled to control any outcrop of small cracks and to extend the boards longevity.

The arbutus tree has been know to live for four hundred years and can grow to 30 metres (100 feet) in height. Our unstable and increasingly extreme weather patterns are having a huge impact on the life of arbutus tree. Over the last fifteen years we have seen beautiful large fully leafed trees, die, one branch at a time. Equally majestic in death, its sculptural beauty haunts.

In the creation of our arbutus boards, we have only used arbutus that have lived out their natural lives.

Pearls

For centuries pearls have been considered symbols of purity, faith, innocence and integrity. Closely connected to the energy of the moon it is no wonder that they've also been associated with fertility and in turn have always had a strong link to the feminine, a link to a woman's "inner goddess". People have turned to pearls to calm and centre themselves, believing pearls to have a balancing energy.

I love to work with fresh water pearls. I find beauty in their imperfections, no two exactly the same.  I'm fascinated by their range of shapes and colours.
